Associate, Mechanical Engineering

About Mission Critical Forensics:

Mission Critical Forensics is a specialized engineering firm with expertise in forensic engineering and data center operations and infrastructure. We provide rigorous analysis for complex engineering challenges, from investigating system failures and performance issues across various critical infrastructure to supporting the design and optimization of data center environments. We are committed to fostering a culture of technical excellence, continuous learning, and rigorous problem-solving.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Associate Mechanical Engineer to join our specialized team. The successful candidate will contribute to our work in both forensic engineering investigations and data center mechanical systems. This role involves analyzing failures, assessing performance issues, and supporting the design and optimization of critical mechanical infrastructure, particularly within data center environments. It requires strong technical skills in HVAC and cooling equipment, proficiency in drafting and relevant software, programming capabilities for data analysis, and exceptional research ability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to forensic engineering investigations, including root cause analysis of mechanical system failures, design deficiencies, and performance anomalies across various critical infrastructure.
  • Support projects related to data center mechanical systems, which may include design analysis, optimization, and troubleshooting beyond purely forensic contexts.
  • Evaluate and assess the performance and failure modes of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems and various cooling equipment in diverse applications.
  • Participate in on-site inspections, data collection, and evidence preservation related to investigations.
  • Perform detailed drafting using AutoCAD to produce accurate and professional engineering drawings, schematics, and layouts relevant to both investigations and data center projects.
  • Utilize programming skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB, VBA) for advanced data analysis, system modeling, and automation of complex calculations to support findings and designs.
  • Conduct thorough data analysis of operational data, sensor logs, and system performance metrics to identify trends, deviations, and causal factors.
  • Apply strong research abilities to investigate industry standards, best practices, relevant codes, and historical data pertinent to forensic engineering cases and data center best practices.
  • Collaborate effectively with senior engineers, project managers, and interdisciplinary teams on complex projects.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and defensible technical reports, expert opinions, and other documentation for clients and potential legal proceedings.
  • Participate in client meetings and presentations as required.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • 1-3 years of progressive experience in mechanical engineering, with direct exposure to HVAC, cooling systems, and/or critical infrastructure environments.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for drafting and design documentation.
  • Demonstrated capability in programming for engineering applications (e.g., data manipulation, simulation).
  • Proven ability in data analysis and interpretation, particularly with large datasets.
  • Strong research ability with a methodical and analytical approach to problem-solving and information gathering.
  • Fundamental understanding of HVAC systems and principles, and various types of cooling equipment.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills (written and verbal), with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, often under tight deadlines.

Preferred:

  • Experience or strong interest in forensic engineering principles or root cause analysis.
  • Familiarity with data center operations, infrastructure, and relevant industry standards (e.g., ASHRAE TC 9.9).
  • EIT designation or working towards P.Eng. licensure in Ontario.
  • Experience with other engineering software relevant to mechanical systems analysis.

Why Join Us:

We offer a challenging and rewarding environment where you can apply your mechanical engineering expertise to solve complex, real-world problems in both forensic investigations and the dynamic data center industry. Join a team dedicated to technical excellence and professional growth.
